Abstract
Students and instructors rightly worry about the impact of cheating in unproctored online exams.Proctoring can be done by webcam, but its capablities are limited and it raises significant privacy concerns. It may be more useful to compare students' exams pairwise or in groups, using statistical tests. For multiple-choice exams, a large number of metrics have been developed over many decades.Several of them have been incorporated into software tools that can be deployed on downloaded answer sets.Similarly, for essay exams, several statistical tests have been developed, and they have been integrated into software. Most software packages for plagiarism detection are standalone, but some can serve as tools within an LMS.A limitation of these tools is that they are specialized to a particular kind of question, and the exam may include questions of several different types.A rubric-based tool can work with questions of different types. It takes advantage of a grading rubric to identify students who "lose points" for the same reasons.
