Abstract
Dear Editor, I am writing to bring attention to the transformative potential of ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) in dentistry and the various aspects that warrant consideration. ChatGPT, an AI-based language model, has shown promising advantages in dental practice, but it also comes with certain limitations and ethical concerns that require our attention as we move forward into this innovative landscape. The advantages of integrating ChatGPT in dentistry are undeniable. One of the most significant benefits lies in patient communication and education. By leveraging AI technology, dental professionals can provide personalized information and real-time responses to patients' questions, which can greatly enhance patient understanding and engagement.1 Clear communication can lead to reduced anxiety during dental visits, fostering a more positive patient experience overall. Additionally, the incorporation of ChatGPT in appointment scheduling allows for increased accessibility and convenience, benefiting both patients and dental practices alike. Nevertheless, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations that accompany AI implementation in dentistry. The foremost concern is ChatGPT's inability to conduct physical examinations. The hands-on aspect of dental care is irreplaceable and plays a critical role in accurate diagnoses and treatment planning.2 Dentists possess the expertise to identify subtleties that AI cannot, making it imperative to view ChatGPT as an assistant rather than a substitute. To maximize its potential, dental professionals must use the AI system in conjunction with their clinical skills, ensuring that patient care remains the top priority. Ethical concerns pertaining to AI in healthcare require careful consideration. Transparency and informed consent are paramount when patients interact with ChatGPT or any AI system. Patients must be aware of their involvement with an AI tool and understand the limitations and capabilities of the technology. This transparency builds trust between patients and healthcare providers and fosters responsible AI usage. Additionally, data privacy and security concerns demand utmost attention. Dental practices must ensure that patient information shared with ChatGPT is securely stored, protected and compliant with applicable data protection regulations.3 Moving forward, a proactive approach is crucial to harnessing the transformative potential of ChatGPT responsibly. Continuous training and validation of the AI model are necessary to keep the system updated and accurate. AI technologies evolve rapidly, and regular reviews of ChatGPT's training data can help ensure the delivery of reliable information to patients and dental professionals.4 To address ethical concerns, the dental community should actively collaborate with policymakers and ethics experts to develop guidelines and ethical frameworks for AI use in dentistry. These guidelines should focus on safeguarding patient welfare, promoting fairness and avoiding potential biases that could impact patient outcomes.5 Furthermore, regulations and standards for AI implementation in dentistry must be established to ensure patient safety and maintain the highest standards of care. Educational integration plays a vital role in preparing dentists for the responsible use of AI. Dental education programmes should incorporate AI and its applications into their curriculum to familiarize future dentists with the technology.6 Teaching students how to leverage ChatGPT effectively and ethically will equip them with the skills needed to integrate AI seamlessly into their practice while recognizing its limitations.7 In conclusion, the transformative potential of ChatGPT in dentistry is a promising development that demands careful consideration and a well-thought-out approach. While the advantages it offers in patient communication, education and appointment scheduling are impressive, we must be mindful of its limitations and ethical concerns. By pursuing continuous training, establishing regulations and prioritizing patient care, we can pave the way for a future where AI technology, like ChatGPT, complements and enhances dental practice, leading to improved patient outcomes and experiences.
