Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI)—meaning digital systems that perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence [1]—may soon transform veterinary medicine [2, 3], just as it is likely to do in human medicine [4, 5]. Like human medical AI [6–8], veterinary AI raises important ethical issues. So far, these issues have not been much examined (for some work that touches on ethics and veterinary AI, see [2, 9–13]). Yet engineers who develop AI for veterinary applications will need to be aware of and even grapple with these ethical issues. In particular, these engineers must understand something about the ethical nature of professional veterinary activity, and how AI might impact it. Our aim in this chapter is to assist in furnishing such an understanding in the context of companion animal medicine.
