Abstract

Artificial Intelligence uses a variety of algorithms, neural network models, language processing models, and adaptive computing to produce outputs that are very similar to work produced by humans. Many teachers have used AI for generating lesson plans, curricula, or other content in early childhood special education classrooms and in working with English Language Learners. A major reason as to why many teachers are not enthusiastic about using AI in their professional practices is because they felt that they did not have the appropriate training in using AI to be able to use it confidently in their classrooms. As a teacher educator, the author recognized that it was crucial for teacher educators and teacher candidates to learn about this evolving technology. After trying out several AI tools to determine which ones aligned with POWER principles, the author shortlisted a few that she could use in her classes and could be useful for her students. This article summarizes her experience in using some of the AI tools that are available for free. The author used AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Dall-E, Canva, Craiyon, ElevenLabs, Microsoft Copilot, Semantic Scholar, and Elicit in assignments and in generating research lists and teaching tasks. These experiences could potentially open the doors for incorporating AI tools in teacher training and preparing our students to be digitally competent.
