Abstract
The limited availability of reading materials for children constitutes a big challenge to literacy development. This chapter utilizes expert reviews and comparative analyses in testing how AI storytelling meets this gap. With the application of AI in generating varied and interactive stories, customized reading resources can thus be made available to effectively meet the goals of beginning literacy in young learners for better engagement and comprehension. However, the quality of the storytelling by AI remains questionable. The chapter therefore compares quality, appropriateness, and educational effectiveness of the stories created by AI with those by a human from the perspectives of language experts and early childhood education professionals. Their feedback also raises the respective strengths and weaknesses of both approaches in support of literacy development. The chapter now explores where technology and education meet to reveal both the innovative possibilities and practical considerations involved in using AI to support young learners to develop literacy through storytelling.
