Abstract
This review paper examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health treatment and highlights the critical ethical considerations associated with its integration. It emphasizes both the potential benefits and the challenges of using AI, particularly in underprivileged regions where such technologies offer opportunities to enhance diagnostic accuracy, personalize treatment plans, and expand access to mental health care. However, these advancements also raise significant ethical, legal, and practical concerns that must be addressed. Key issues include ensuring patient privacy, obtaining informed consent, and guaranteeing equitable access to AI-driven mental health services. Given that effective treatment relies heavily on the human element, the paper underscores the importance of preserving the therapeutic relationship between mental health professionals and their patients. Furthermore, ongoing monitoring and evaluation of AI systems are essential to mitigate risks such as bias, misdiagnosis, and system errors, thereby ensuring that AI technologies augment rather than replace human practitioners. Globally, the adoption of AI in mental health reflects diverse implementation strategies shaped by varying cultural contexts and regulatory frameworks. The development of comprehensive policies that promote ethical AI use while fostering innovation requires collaboration among policymakers, ethicists, technologists, and mental health professionals. This review ultimately advocates for a balanced approach that integrates AI capabilities with human expertise, upholds ethical standards, and maintains human oversight to improve patient outcomes and well-being.
