Preliminary Insights from Designing ChatGPT Prompt Strategies to Engage Egyptian Children in Dialogues with Historical Figures

Abstract

History is an interesting and vital subject for children, as it grows solid roots into their identity. Often at Egyptian schools, History is accessible through textbooks and documents in formal Arabic language. Coupled with the amount of memorization it requires, many children would consider it a boring subject and grow apathetic towards it. This research takes a step into growing enthusiasm for learning history, leveraging Large Language Models to design a learning experience, whereby a child could have a conversation, personalized to their age, with a historical figure of their choice in the Egyptian Arabic dialect. We report findings from designing Chat GPT-4o prompt strategies to accomplish this goal. Our contributions are: 1) a dataset of two gold conversations between children and historical characters obtained using wizard-of-oz experiments; 2) reporting the potential and limitations of multiple prompt designs to resemble the gold examples. We conclude that unplanned behavior remains to exist despite the promise of creating engaging conversations, which necessitates further exploration.
