Abstract
This review explores the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in special education, focusing on its role in fostering inclusivity and accessibility for learners with disabilities. By examining the applications, impact, ethical considerations, best practices, and future directions of generative AI in special education, this chapter offers insights into how AI technologies can support the diverse needs of learners in educational settings. Key findings highlight the ability of generative AI to enhance accessibility, accommodation, and individualization in education through personalized learning experiences tailored to the unique needs of learners with disabilities. However, challenges such as privacy, bias, transparency, and accountability must be carefully managed to ensure responsible and ethical use of AI technologies. Effective implementation of generative AI requires collaboration between educators, technologists, policymakers, and stakeholders to design inclusive solutions, incorporate user feedback, provide training and support for educators, and advocate for policies that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity. Reflecting on the transformative potential of generative AI, this review underscores the importance of continued research, innovation, and advocacy to create more accessible and empowering educational environments for all learners.
