Abstract
The rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot is transforming computer science education by changing how students learn to code and how instructors design curricula and assess learning. These tools offer real-time feedback, code generation, and debugging assistance, making programming more accessible and efficient. However, this shift raises concerns about overreliance on automation, erosion of foundational skills, and ethical issues around authorship and academic integrity. This chapter explores the educational and moral implications of using generative AI in programming instruction. Based on interviews with students across computer science programs and professional programmers, the paper examines how these tools affect learning outcomes, engagement, and skill development. While students appreciate AI support, educators note reduced critical thinking and understanding of core concepts. Many learners struggle to explain AI-generated code, revealing a gap between task completion and proper comprehension.
