Abstract

While ChatGPT assists students in their learning process, it also poses potential threats to academic integrity. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of ChatGPT usage on students’ English language skills, perceived ethics, and higher-order thinking skills at universities in Vietnam. The study employed a quantitative instrument including a 14 -item questionnaire, and then conducted Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS_SEM) for data analysis. The data was gathered from 160 undergraduates who used ChatGPT to learn English for at least one month. Findings from path analysis revealed ChatGPT had a moderate effect on students’ perception of ethics while its impact on their English language and higher-order thinking skills was weak, showing that an awareness of the impact of ChatGPT on English language learning would assist students in taking advantage of its strengths to utilize it more critically; there is a need for educational practitioners to implement pedagogical strategies and shape policies for students when leveraging AI-based tools in school settings.
