Abstract

The rapid rise of generative AI technologies – such as ChatGPT, DALL·E, and large language models – has reshaped academic publishing, intensifying the need for ethical, inclusive, and context-sensitive editorial frameworks. This chapter introduces the Banyak Dalang Sawung Galing (BDSG) conceptual model, a culturally grounded approach inspired by Javanese symbolism and adapted for AI-assisted editorial environments. The model’s four symbolic figures – the Swan, Deer, Rooster, and Peacock – represent inclusivity, strategic leadership, ethical judgment, and scholarly presentation, offering a value-based framework for responsible publishing. BDSG addresses challenges including the marginalization of diverse perspectives, ethical ambiguity in AI-generated content, and the need for clarity in research dissemination. It emphasizes transparency, accountable authorship, and the continued centrality of human judgment in AI-mediated editorial workflows. These principles are operationalized through practical integrations with tools such as GrammarlyGO, GPTZero, Turnitin, and DALL·E, supporting ethical decision-making, inclusive submission practices, and enhanced content design. The model’s applicability is demonstrated through structured mappings between editorial stages and AI tools, ensuring feasibility across scholarly publishing and educational contexts. Ultimately, BDSG embeds cultural and symbolic values into platforms such as Open Journal Systems and ScholarOne, offering an ethically grounded and culturally responsive framework for generative AI-enabled publishing.
