A world of chronic crises

Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses some of the main findings emerging from the individual chapters. It summarizes the impacts of the different chronic crises, globally and across social groups, and it discusses their political dynamics. Chronic crises all have elusive end phases without physical destruction, but they display distinct onset dynamics as well as diverse temporal manifestations of peak impacts. The fact that we are living in a world of chronic crises is more a continuation of human history than anything extraordinary; our determination to address them is what appears more recent. In the competition for political attention and resources, however, chronic crises suffer from several disadvantages that are discussed. With respect to practical implications, the chapter lists several recommendations, including the added value of using the concept, the benefits of broad advocacy coalitions, the idea of a dedicated agency for chronic crises, and the importance of sustained multidisciplinary, and multi-sectoral engagement, as well as coordination across multiple policy domains.
