Abstract

This scoping review aims to outline the current state of evidence regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the debriefing phase of simulation-based education for healthcare students. Debriefing is recognized as a critical component of simulation-based learning. However, the role of AI has not yet been sufficiently defined, as this field is still in its early stages of development. To address this gap, the review focuses specifically on AI-supported debriefing across various health disciplines and encompasses a broad range of AI methods, including generative AI and automated feedback systems. The review aims to identify the technological mechanisms and educational strategies employed, examine reported outcomes, and highlight gaps in current knowledge and practice. This study will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews and will be reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search will be conducted across multiple electronic databases (PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Medline (OVID), Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL) and gray literature sources. Studies published between 2000 and 2026 that involve health students in simulation-based education contexts will be considered. Post-registration methodological clarifications are available in the project files: https://osf.io/zt8na/files/28j37
