Abstract
The academic literature on the development of artificial intelligence applications in the military industry primarily focuses on technical requirements and legal and ethical paradigms. Nonetheless, there is a gap in the scholarly literature regarding an essential element of any military action: the role of command officers. The aim is to examine Indian military officers' perceptions and reasoning regarding the integration of AI into the military decision-making process. It examines the logic of their approval or rejection of the usage of AI on the battlefield. The analysis introduces a methodological innovation to the war science study vignette survey, enabling the determination of the dynamics between humans and AI across increasing levels of threat to human life in three scenarios. Empirical studies indicate that officers retain confidence in the use of AI in military missions, regardless of the mission's risk profile or complexity, provided that principles such as human command remain in place.
