Abstract
Writing proficiency serves as a fundamental pillar of academic success for English language majors, yet the recent emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has initiated a profound paradigm shift in writing instruction. This study presents a systematic bibliometric review of 51 core publications refined from the Scopus database to clarify the latest developments in AI-driven enhancements and identify existing research gaps regarding student motivation. The findings reveal an exponential surge in scholarly interest starting in 2023, peaking in 2025, with China emerging as the dominant contributor to the field. Thematic analysis through VOSviewer indicates a significant transition from broad technological applications toward specialized scaffolding mechanisms like ChatGPT that prioritize the developmental growth of writing skills. However, the research identifies a critical lack of longitudinal evidence concerning the long-term impact of AI on intrinsic motivation and the professional writing identity of learners. Ultimately, the study advocates for a hybrid pedagogical framework that balances the rapid diagnostic capabilities of AI with human instructional expertise to ensure genuine learner empowerment.
