Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the longitudinal effects of ethical artificial intelligence pedagogy on AI literacy, moral competence, and educational equity in Indian higher education, considering urban and rural institutional contexts aligned with NEP 2020. Method: A three-year quasi-experimental mixed-methods study was conducted from 2022 to 2025 across 12 Indian higher education institutions. The sample included 1,168 students, divided into intervention and control cohorts, as well as faculty members and administrators. Quantitative data were analyzed using ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, mixed-effects models, and effect sizes. Qualitative data were collected through reflective journals, focus groups, and learning analytics, with thematic triangulation. Results: The intervention group demonstrated substantial gains in AI literacy, reaching 78.9% mastery compared with 51.3% in the control group. Ethical awareness also improved significantly, with 76.0% of intervention participants achieving high awareness compared with 39.0% in the control group. Improvements were also observed in creativity, collaboration, and ethical reasoning. The results showed equity across gender and discipline. However, persistent urban-rural disparities remained, especially in infrastructure, ethical awareness, and institutional policy adoption. Conclusion: Ethical AI pedagogy can strengthen technical literacy, moral competence, and human-centered skills in higher education. However, equitable implementation depends on investments in digital infrastructure, faculty training, and institutional governance. The study offers conditional evidence for scalable ethical AI education in Global South contexts.
