Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education has transformed academic processes globally, offering opportunities for enhanced learning, personalized instruction, and improved research efficiency. However, its adoption in Nigerian universities remains limited and contentious, raising concerns about its actual influence on educational quality and academic integrity. This qualitative study examined the integration of AI in academics and its impact on the quality of education in a Nigerian university using thematic analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 28 participants comprising lecturers and students across five faculties at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. The findings revealed three major themes: (1) AI as a tool for improving academic performance through objectivity, accessibility, and personalized learning; (2) skepticism about AI’s inability to enhance long-term knowledge retention and critical thinking; and (3) perceptions of AI use as potentially fraudulent, encouraging academic dishonesty and dependency. The study concludes that while AI possesses significant potential to improve teaching and learning outcomes, overreliance without ethical and pedagogical control may undermine academic standards. The study recommends balanced utilization, capacity building, ethical guidelines, and continuous monitoring to ensure that AI complements human creativity, integrity, and pedagogical expertise in advancing educational quality.
